Last night was New Year's Eve. With nothing better to do, we decided to spend the evening in front of our fireplace instead of driving somewhere. Our son left in the middle of the afternoon to spend the time with friends and countdown to the new year. Suprisingly, around 10pm, he called and asked if we wanted him home. Of course we did but not if he preferred to spend time with friends before heading back to college. Less than an hour later, he was walking through the door and told us that he just wanted to welcome the new year with us. Nice to have him home until the good night hug when he said: "Happy New Year on the countdown....we have 11 months and 22 days left." Yep, that sneaky Mayan calendar speculation has once again surfaced. What a nice thought on the way to dreamland! Of course the initial thought of "what would I do if the world were really going to end this year?" gave way to thoughts of usual media recount of all the people who have left our presence this year. Seems like that's the most fun thing they can concieve of to offset our positive thoughts and hopeful expectations of what the new year will bring. It brings us back to that march of time thing again. All of us lose family and friends each year. But do we sit around on New Year's Eve and tick them off in a list as a way of remembering them? Probably most of us don't. The process of mourning the loss and missing those who are no longer in our lives does not happen on a calenar schedule. Those moments pop up at some of the most unexpected times. So, after delving into that piece of the annual persepective, I then came around to the real quesiton that was tugging at the tail end of my thoughts.....a shadow that loomed large. If we understood that our time to walk this earth was limited, what would we do differently with our lives? Would we make amends with family and friends? We would work harder to ensure that our lives had a positive impact on others? Or, would we just decide to become so self centered and do whatever pleased us? Would it bring out the best or the worst in us? Thankfully, the majority of people dancing to the music of life don't know the number of their days or years. Perhaps, that is why we look forward to the arrival of the calendar date marking a new block of time in our lives. Perhaps that unknown factor is really what gives us the inspiration to live our lives well. Happy New Year to all my friends and family. I hope that this year you live your life well...have fun....enjoy good health and find a way to leave behind something to be well remembered by in your life's journey. |
